Pilates is a form of low impact mind and body conditioning exercise which focuses on strength, flexibility, balance, posture, core stability and breathing to enable the human body to function optimally. Deep inner core muscles are targeted by movement sequences using gravity, body weight and equipment to create resistance. It can provide a total body workout and follows the principles of:

Concentration - focus the mind on movement, breathing and alignment

Centering - activation of the deep inner core

Precision - execute movement correctly with bodily awareness and attention to detail

Flow - move smoothly and efficiently

Breathing - use breath to assist performance, co-ordinate movement with the breath

Control - conscious, deliberate movements controlled by the mind

The method was developed by Joseph Pilates in the early 20th century in his work with bed bound WW1 soldiers, but has continued to gain popularity and is now used extensively across both the fitness and rehabilitation sectors.

Clinical Pilates is a modification of the more traditional, generic Pilates exercises and used by Physiotherapists in rehabilitation. Recent research advocates the retraining of deep stabilising muscles in the management of those with injury or pain.

Clinical Pilates focuses on the retraining and recruitment of these stabilising muscles along with improving strength, posture and flexibility. Clinical Pilates thus involves the application of specific exercises carefully selected to target a specific problem, hence the need for your Physiotherapist to have a thorough understanding of what problems you may have. This ensures optimal gains whilst minimising the likelihood of aggravating an injury or condition.

Clinical Pilates is a fantastic way to overcome the impact of carrying and delivering a baby.

The low impact exercises can be very effective in restoring your pelvic floor function, your abdominal tone and improving any back and pelvic pain.

You can be confident that the exercises are safe to participate in even if you are experiencing pain, symptoms of prolapse/incontinence or abdominal separation because they will be tailored to meet your needs and you will be monitored closely.
