This is a postnatal Physiotherapy assessment - recommended for ALL Mums, after EVERY birth, at ANY stage (it's still relevant if it is some months or even years since you had children!)

The assessment itself and the aspects covered can vary depending on your needs or specific concerns following the birth of your baby. We usually start by finding out a bit of background about your birth(s) and your general health, which will help guide the focus of our assessment. We discuss your concerns, goals and what you'd like to get out of the session.

You may come along concerned about ongoing back/pelvic pain, issues with leaking wind/urine/faeces, problems with your bladder/bowel function, painful sex, vaginal dryness, abdominal separation, a feeling of a bulge from the vagina or heaviness, an uncomfortable episiotomy or C Section scar or just concerned about your future pelvic health. We can discuss and help with any of these issues!

The physical assessment may vary depending on the key issues, and the nature of your birth and recovery afterwards. We may look at your postnatal posture and how this is influencing your current problems. We can examine your lower back and pelvis, check you for an abdominal separation and check your scars.

The internal vaginal element of the assessment is of course optional; you will be advised if this is clinically indicated or not and it is up to you if you wish to do this. It is a very insightful, discrete examination which tells you a great deal about your present situation and guides further management. It enables us to check your strength, endurance and co-ordination of the pelvic floor plus correct/improve your technique. You will leave with a bespoke plan for approaching pelvic floor exercises.

If you have any pelvic health concerns following birth, don't do what most ladies do and wait 7 years to seek help - these issues are common but NOT normal and they ARE treatable. Book your assessment to tackle these issues head on, and find out how you can avoid such problems as you get older. Appointments are available with me in Leighton Buzzard at St Judes Clinic on Mondays and Tuesdays.

If you wish to discuss your specific situation feel free to get in touch, prior to making a booking.

Thanks for reading,

Jo
